Controlled scribbling
The marks stop being an accident. Somewhere in here your child works out that the line on the page is coming from their own arm, and they start doing it on purpose. You will see the same shape repeated over and over, usually big loops, because the movement is still coming from the shoulder rather than the fingers.
- Big circular loops that fill the whole page
- The same mark repeated with obvious enjoyment
- Dots and stabs, testing what the tool does
- Holding the paper down with the other hand, which is a real milestone
“You went round and round and round. Look how much of the page you covered.”
