Looking for kids’ art classes in Norwood for your 3 to 6 year old? Most Norwood families end up choosing between three options: an after-school craft session at the local community centre, a one-off workshop at the gallery, or a structured weekly art program. This page is about the third option.

Mini Ivy is a structured kids’ art studio at 211 Henley Beach Road, Torrensville. Norwood families have been making the cross-town drive since we opened — here’s what to expect and why it’s worth it.

The drive from Norwood to Mini Ivy

Norwood to Torrensville is 17 minutes off-peak, west across the city. Take The Parade to Rundle Street, through the CBD, then Henley Beach Road. The studio is on the southern side, just past Rosetta Street, with free parking out front and on Mary Street.

For Norwood parents who’d rather skip the drive, the H30 bus runs Norwood Parade to Torrensville directly and stops 200 metres from the studio.

Why Norwood families travel to Mini Ivy

Norwood has a strong creative scene for adults — galleries, studios, the Adelaide Central School of Art is nearby. For ages 3 to 6, the offerings are thinner. Most are casual community art sessions or one-off workshops. What Mini Ivy delivers that those don’t:

  • Same teacher, same room, every week. Real creative development needs continuity. Drop-in workshops can’t build on what the child did last time.
  • Structured technique progression. Every term covers six or seven distinct artist techniques. Children leave able to name and use them.
  • Small groups. Capped numbers so every child gets real one-on-one attention from the educator.
  • Real materials. Artist-grade paint, decent brushes, quality paper. Not craft-kit supplies.

What Norwood parents typically book

Three main use cases for our Norwood families:

  • Weekly art classes. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are our most-booked slots for east-side families. See current timetable.
  • School holiday workshops. Single sessions or multi-session packs across every Adelaide school holiday block. Read the school holiday guide.
  • Birthday parties. Several Norwood, Kensington, and Beulah Park families have booked the studio for exclusive birthday hire. Birthday party packages from $550.

The Norwood-area children we see

Children at Mini Ivy from the Norwood area come from across Norwood, Kensington, Stepney, Beulah Park, College Park, Kent Town, Marryatville, and Maylands. Most attend Norwood Primary, Trinity Gardens Primary, Marryatville Primary, Loreto College Junior School, or the Norwood community kindergarten before joining us in their pre-school year.

Is the cross-town drive worth it?

Honest answer: depends on your child. If they’re three and just need somewhere fun to be for an hour, a closer community art session does the job. If they’re four or five and starting to take their drawing seriously, the structure of a real studio program makes a meaningful difference.

Most Norwood parents who try a free trial session first end up enrolling. The trial is the easiest way to see if the difference is worth the drive for your child specifically.

How to start

Two options:

  • Book a free trial session — 30 minutes at the studio, you and your child see how it works.
  • Call Valando direct on 0433 602 888. She’ll talk through your child’s age, what they’re into, and what days work for you.
