Hindmarsh and Bowden have grown into one of Adelaide’s busiest young-family precincts. Plenty of new apartments, new townhouses, a lot of pre-school-age children. What the area still doesn’t have, despite all the growth, is a dedicated kids’ art studio. The closest one for ages 3 to 6 is Mini Ivy in Torrensville, six minutes away.
This page is for Hindmarsh and Bowden families looking for a real structured art program for their child, not just another casual craft session at the cafe.
The Hindmarsh and Bowden commute to Mini Ivy
Six minutes by car from Hindmarsh or Bowden. South along Port Road, then west on Henley Beach Road. The studio is at 211 Henley Beach Road, just past the Torrensville shops. Free street parking out front.
The Bowden train station to Mini Ivy isn’t direct — the buses going west on Henley Beach Road are the easier route. The H30, 286 and J1 all stop near the studio.
Why Hindmarsh and Bowden families pick Mini Ivy
The area has cafes, parks, the markets, the entertainment centre. Plenty going on for adults. For preschool-age kids, the structured options thin out quickly. Most “creative” activities for under-sevens in Hindmarsh and Bowden are either:
- Council-run library storytime (free, casual, weekly)
- Pop-up craft tables at the Adelaide Showground or markets (one-off, no structure)
- Music classes or ballet (great, but not art)
What’s missing is a structured art studio. That’s what Mini Ivy offers: weekly 90-minute classes with the same educator, real technique progression, real materials. For Hindmarsh and Bowden families looking to develop their child’s creative skills properly, the six-minute drive is the practical option.
What we offer
- Weekly art classes for ages 3 to 6 — Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. Same teacher each week, same time slot. Class schedule.
- School holiday art workshops across every Adelaide school holiday block. School holiday program.
- Birthday parties with exclusive studio hire. Birthday party packages from $550.
Who comes to Mini Ivy from the Hindmarsh and Bowden area
Children from Hindmarsh, Bowden, Brompton, Welland, West Hindmarsh, Croydon, Renown Park, and Ovingham. Most attend Hindmarsh Primary, Brompton Primary, Whitefriars Catholic School, or the Bowden community kindergarten before joining us.
The kindy-to-Mini-Ivy progression is the most common path for our Hindmarsh-area families — children come for a weekly class in their final preschool year, build the routine, then continue through their Reception year.
What an art session actually delivers
Each Mini Ivy session is 90 minutes. The structure: welcome and warm-up, technique demonstration, 50 minutes of guided studio time, then pack-down and group reflection. Every child takes home a finished piece they can name and explain.
Across a school term, we rotate through: drawing fundamentals, watercolour, mixed media, sensory art, air-dry clay, print-making, and collage. By the end of a term your child has tried six or seven distinct artist techniques, knows what each one is for, and has finished pieces showing real skill.
Booking from Hindmarsh or Bowden
Two options:
- Book a free trial session first — 30 minutes at the studio, you watch, your child tries a short version of a typical class.
- Call Valando direct on 0433 602 888. She’ll talk through your child’s age, schedule, and what suits.
Sibling discounts apply when you book two or more children. Multi-child Hindmarsh families pay less per child than the single-enrolment rate.
